A local cable channel broadcast an interesting TV show about finding your family history. Genealogy is a new interest of mine, so I’ve captured the web links mentioned in the program. You might find these useful in your family search too…

The US Gen Web Project is a group of volunteers working together to provide free genealogy websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. Organized by county and state, US Gen Web provides links to all the state genealogy websites, which provide gateways to the counties. usgenweb.org

TXGenWeb.org is a related all-volunteer project linking to genealogical and historical records listed by county in Texas. txgenweb.org

The National Archives is a great site for the general public, genealogists, family historians, veterans and their families, and teaches and students. archives.gov

The National Archives will host it’s sixth annual Genealogy Fair in Washington, DC on April 14th and 15th.

The LDS church has a great site for free family history, family tree and genealogy records. I’ve heard this is a very complete family research website. familysearch.org

The Proceedings of Old Bailey is a fully searchable edition of the largest body of texts detailing the lives of non-elite people ever published, containing 197,745 criminal trials held at London’s central criminal court. It’s value as a historical source is the reliability of the proceedings as a transcript of what happened in court. oldbaileyonline.org

Some other interesting research tools are:

Footnote.com helps you find and share historic documents. Many never-before-seen historic documents are available through their unique partnerships with The National Archives and the Library of Congress. footnote.com

WorldCat is the world’s largest network of library content and services, where you search the collections of libraries in your community and thousands more around the world. WorldCat libraries are dedicated to providing access to their resources on the Web, connecting you to the collections and services of more than 10,000 libraries worldwide. worldcat.org

There’s a dozen different channels already linked to a growing list of government agencies posting video on a variety of subjects.

The White House, NASA, CDC, Library of Congress, FEMA, NOAA, the Food and Drug Administration, Veterans Affairs, Department of Education and Social Security all have YouTube Channels, and the list is growing.

We’ve been watching the trend explode in the past couple of years, after companies and corporations starting getting wise to the fact that they can connect directly with customers or prospects online, especially through video.

www.youtube.com/usgovernment

Check out whitehouse.gov/newmedia/ to see how new media is being embraced by the new administration.

The Library of Congress has a Flickr photo stream www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress
