I think of Google as my search engine of choice, and I like using their other applications like Chrome, Gmail, Adsense, Adwords, Google Earth and YouTube.

I’ve never considered Google as an ISP or internet service provider. But Google is about to start testing ultra-high speed fiber optic broadband in several areas across the country.

google.com has issued a request for information from interested parties to participate in their experiment, claiming the possibility to deliver internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what is available today. They call it “think big with a gig.”

They’re talking about one gigabit per second, optical-fiber-to-the-home connections, serving anywhere from 50,000 up to 500,000 people. That’s a lot of bandwidth!

Currently that kind of territory is being served and expanded upon by the likes of AT&T and Verizon, who are locked in head-to-head competition over optical-fiber-to-the-home connections. It’s still developing, but you can find it in the larger metropolitan areas in the newer homes and apartment communities.

usatoday.com has a good article that argues both the pros and cons of such a fiber network.

There’s more info on Google Fiber on their webpage.

One of my favorite radio commentators, Paul Harvey has passed away at age 90 in Phoenix. I sure will miss his familiar and folksy voice, who always wished us a “good day!”

As I read the news, I discovered some amazing things about this legendary broadcaster…

Harvey is considered the greatest radio salesman of all time, and has been recognized as Salesman of the Year, Commentator of the Year, Person of the Year, Father of the Year, and American of the Year. He was inducted into both the National Association of Broadcasters Radio Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Hall of Fame. Harvey has received eleven Freedom Foundation Awards, the Horatio Alger Award and an honorary degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He was also awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.

Wikipedia lists one of Harvey’s quotes…
The most noticeable features of Harvey’s idiosyncratic delivery was his dramatic pauses, quirky intonations and his folksiness. A large part of his success stemmed from the seamlessness with which he segued from his monologue into reading commercial messages. He explained his enthusiastic support of his sponsors as such: “I am fiercely loyal to those willing to put their money where my mouth is.”
